CAR BOOT / PORTABLE MOBILITY SCOOTER. When I give an opinion on a scooter or chair, it's not the opinion of a salesman, it's the opinion of someone who uses and understands what it's like to use mobility scooters and powerchairs.

By far the most common question I get asked about scooters is,'what weight will it take'? It's an unfortunate fact of life, that if you're disabled, you generally don't use as many calories as an able bodied person and it can be difficult not to put on weight. Consequently a lot of scooter and chair users are big blokes and big girls.

The reason I'm mentioning this? Because it's one of the main reasons I'm a fan of the Rascal Liteway range. The majority of'small' scooters share essentially the same design; a chassis made from L shaped angle iron, dismantleable and able to carry about 18 stone. The Liteway 3 is a unique design, with some unique qualities. Firstly, just look at the chassis. None of this L shaped thin metal. And quite honestly I think they're being conservative. Most scooters actually look like if you exceed their weight limit they would just bend. Look at the pictures of the chassis of the Liteway 3, it is immensely strong. It's not however, hugely heavy.

Good design, large diameter thin wall tubing and triangulation. This is a super strong scooter without the weight penalty you would expect.

The Liteway 3 has 4 wheels but is effectively a 3 wheeler; my favourite type of scooter. The Liteway 3 isn't a small scooter; there is a lot of space on it and the clever and compact drivetrain design means it has masses of leg and foot room.

It also has a huge storage basket under the seat; so much better than the tiny and near useless little baskets that most scooters have fitted on their tillers. This basket is large enough to carry a substantial amount of shopping and (clever design again), because it's supported directly on the floorpan and chassis, it can carry heavy objects like bottles of lemonade or milk. It might seem like a minor point, but if you've ever come out of a supermarket with bags hanging from the handlebars of your scooter and more perched on your knees, you'll understand. Although the Liteway 3 isn't at all a tiny scooter, the 4 wheel / 3 wheel. If you see what I mean!

The steering actually goes beyond 90 degrees. Being able to do 180 degree turns on a full sized scooter like the Liteway is such a big bonus and makes getting around shops so much easier. The overall size of the Liteway 3 and comparatively large diameter wheels give the Liteway 3 far better ride quality than most small scooters and make limited off road excursions a real possibility. There is no suspension, but use on canal tow paths and unmade paths is certainly within the Liteway 3's abilities. As you'll see from the photo's the Liteway 3 also dismantles to fit in your car.

The seat comes off, the battery pack lifts out and the tiller folds down. You can also, (very easily actually), remove the whole drivetrain (motor, transaxle and rear wheels) if you want to make the individual pieces as light as possible to lift into your car.

It's not going to fit in the boot of your Smart car or Fiesta, at least not without a seat or 2 folded down, but it will certainly fit in most mid sized and up cars and SUV's. This example has some marks and paint chips, but I think more from storage than use. If you look at the picture of the underside you'll see that there are very few marks on it at all, indicating little use. I have stripped, cleaned, lubricated and checked it and it's running just as it should. Batteries have been checked on our Professional Battery Load Tester. Unlike the simple volt meters used by most sellers, our tester measures and checks the actual amp/hour capacity, (strength), of the batteries. Tyres are all in very good condition and the Liteway 3. Comes complete with Mains charger and under seat basket.
